This just in: Dublin animation studio Brown Bag has been acquired by Canadian company 9 Story Media Group.

Via The Hollywood Reporter: The deal, which gives 9 Story control over Brown Bag’s operations in Dublin, Manchester and Los Angeles and its 170-strong staff, is the first for the Canadian company after getting an equity boost from Zelnick Media Capital and media entrepreneur Neil Court. MORE.

Via Television Business International: The deal is the most significant in the animation sector for some time, though financial details of the agreement were not revealed. Brown Bag, which Cathal Gaffney leads as co-founder and CEO, has produced popular animated shows such as Octonauts, Doc McStuffins, Bing Bunny and Henry Hugglemonster. The 21-year-old firm has offices in Dublin, Manchester and Los Angeles, has had much success in US kids television and is double-Oscar-nomainated. “We’re absolutely thrilled to be joining forces with Brown Bag Films,” said 9 Story president and CEO Vince Commisso. “Cathal, Darragh [O’Connell, Brown Bag co-founder] and their team in Ireland have a well established track record and an outstanding reputation for producing high quality animation. Brown Bag will retain its brand following the deal, which closed yesterday. Gaffney and creative director O’Connell will continue to lead the company, and plan to hire an additional 50 staff to its current 170 in a bid to hit new markets. MORE.

Via The Irish Times: Chief executive Cathal Gaffney said following the acquisition, Brown Bag would be able to exploit more of its original content due to 9 Story’s strategic strengths in licensing, distribution and merchandising. “This is a coming together of two great companies with a shared love of animation and storytelling that really resonates with kids.
